ResumoWe review here the evolution of statistical tools used by specialists in dynamics of exploited living marine resources as they have been applied by fisheries management authorities, and introduce some new simple tools that may permit the separation of naturally induced from human induced interannual variabilities in resource abundances. The task of modeling and predicting the impact of human perturbations in the dynamics of otherwise naturally evolving environmental systems, may by the classical problem of fisheries dynamics, where the level of exploitation has to be balanced against the natural rates of replenishment in a way that sustainability of the stock is guaranteed, with maximum levels of permissible fishing effort that may keep reasonable social and economic de returns. In the past this modeling was done through logistic models and their successors, with the central concepts being the so-called Maximum Sustainable Yield and Optimum Sustainable Yield, concepts still in use by some national fisheries authorities throughout the world due to ease in their application for management decision making. Although the concepts were initially devised to be applied to management of fish populations living is small water bodies, they were nevertheless applied blidy as tools to open ocean resource management. There is an increasing awareness that these concepts are really insleading, due to the fact that in a large number of heavily exploited.
